Project Background
SRC Infrastructure is proud to support Luton Rising as their Engineering Delivery Partner, by carrying out the first-year Principal Inspection (PI) of the newly installed Luton DART passenger transit system. This state-of-the-art, automated cable-driven rail link offers a fast, efficient connection between Luton Airport Parkway station and London Luton Airport.
Replacing traditional shuttle buses with a 2.1km fully automated people mover system, the DART—opened to the public in March 2023—marks a significant leap forward in transport innovation. In its first year of operation, the DART carried over 2.5million people between the station and the airport terminal.
Luton Airport itself is one of the fastest growing airports, driving economic and employment growth in the area, and has been recognised for its commitment to delivering exceptional customer service. Luton Rising have plans for the long-term expansion of the airport up to 32 million passengers per year, which will create around 11,000 new jobs and an additional £1.5b in economic activity, and the DART will be vital in supporting this growth.
SRC’s inspection helps ensure the system’s long-term reliability by thoroughly assessing its critical civil assets.
Project Overview
SRC has carried out the Principal Inspection of the Luton DART’s key infrastructure, with a particular focus on its 310m-long viaduct. This essential structure connects Parkway Station and Gateway Bridge, comprising of CFA Piles, Reinforced Concrete Pile Caps, Piers, Steel Plate Girders and Reinforced Concrete Deck. Through detailed asset identification, condition assessments, and rigorous inspection reporting—complemented by internal assurance checks—our surveys provide Luton Rising with a clear understanding of the viaduct’s current condition. This proactive approach enables strategic maintenance planning and effective asset management, ensuring the transit system remains safe and efficient for years to come.
