Project Background
Barking Riverside extension includes 4.5km of new track, a viaduct, and stations – it is one of several transport measures designed to serve the emerging development area at Barking. Barking Riverside is the largest housing development in east London, with planning permission for up to 10,800 new homes, as well as healthcare, shopping, community and leisure facilities. Without a new rail link in place, the full potential of the development at Barking Riverside cannot be achieved.
Client Enrichement
and knowledge transfer
At an early stage, TfL’s delivery team recognised the challenges such a complex programme presented and engaged with its Integrator Framework to ensure the right support was available. Following a procurement exercise, LendLease, supported by SRC Infrastructure was asked to provide Project, Engineering and Construction Management partner services. The offer was developed in line with ICE’s Project 13 guidelines and philosophy. The team, embedded within TfL has been seamlessly supporting the delivery of the project for over a year, augmenting capability and capacity in many ways.
Informal knowledge sharing occurs when a proactive culture of collaboration and cohesion is fostered. We believe it is vital to leave a sustainable legacy following the conclusion of any contract. We will design a joint team of TfL and SRC staff to enable high performance and knowledge transfer built in from the outset with a capacity-building ethos, ‘on the job’ skills transfer and a gradual transition of roles as TfL staff develop their skills or new staff are recruited.
The appointed Engineer leading these works, will hold monthly performance reviews against KPIs, not only including deliverables but knowledge transfer and up skilling.
SRC embedded engineers form part of the wider TfL Power and E&M Community and regularly attend TfL Lunch Time Learning sessions as well as conducting internal Lunch Time Learning Sessions and Webinars on a range of topics. As part of these works, we would present a Lunch Time Learning to the wider TfL Power and E&M Community. As part of the works SRC would provide Targeted Technical Upskilling and or Mentoring to TfL identified staff as well as providing TfL Staff access to our in-house knowledge sharing workshops.

Cost-effecitve collaboration
The team works across TfL’s engineering stakeholders laterally and vertically with the supply chain. SRC do this as part of the integrated team. Our experience in this model, the delivery-focused yet assured DNA that SRC brings, and our resourcing flexibility supplement the TfL team’s in the most cost-effective way and has demonstrably contributed to better programme outcomes for TfL, its passengers and London.
Navigating challenges through COVID-19
During COVID-19, relationships and collaboration have been tested. TfL is under extraordinary financial pressure due to reduced income which has affected all parts of the organisation. In an open, collaborative way, the Integrator team worked with TfL to adjust levels of effort, costs and headcount to meet budgets without impacting the project outcome. Being able to openly discuss COVID challenges whilst maintaining project momentum has been due to the trust that has made this collaborative approach work so well throughout the entire team.
