This weekend marks the official opening of Cambridge South Station, a major milestone for the UK’s rail network that will transform access to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and support future growth across the region.
SRC Infrastructure is proud to have supported Network Rail by providing project management services throughout the development of the scheme, from the early concept stages through to detailed design. Our embedded project team supported programme coordination, stakeholder management, governance and the progression of the project through key design milestones, helping to facilitate the successful delivery of this nationally significant transport investment.
The new station is expected to serve around 1.8 million passengers every year, providing direct rail connections to destinations including London St Pancras International, London Liverpool Street, Birmingham International and Stansted Airport. Situated adjacent to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the station significantly improves access for patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, students and visitors travelling to one of Europe’s largest centres for biomedical research, healthcare and life sciences.
The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is home to more than 23,000 employees, world-renowned research institutions, the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Royal Papworth Hospital and leading life sciences organisations. By providing a fast, sustainable transport link directly into the campus, the station is expected to play an important role in supporting continued economic growth, scientific innovation and improved access to healthcare.
The station features four platforms, step-free access throughout, modern passenger facilities, retail space, over 1,000 cycle parking spaces, and direct links to the city’s cycle network and guided busway. Network Rail expects around 95% of passengers to arrive by public transport, walking or cycling, reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainable connectivity.
The opening of Cambridge South represents far more than the delivery of a new railway station. It creates a new gateway to one of the UK’s most important centres of research, healthcare and innovation, reducing journey times, improving accessibility and encouraging more sustainable travel for millions of passengers over the coming years. The station also becomes the first in the country to open under Great British Railways branding, marking another significant milestone in the evolution of Britain’s railway.
“Congratulations to Network Rail and everyone involved in bringing this important project to completion. SRC is delighted to have played a part in delivering infrastructure that will provide lasting benefits for passengers, communities and the wider UK economy.”
