We are thrilled to announce that on October 12th, a group of us from SRC undertook a great challenge – rowing an impressive 26 miles down the River Thames. But this wasn’t just about the challenge or the thrill of the journey; it’s about raising vital funds for a cause close to our hearts.
Let us introduce you to the Shadwell Basin Outdoor Activity Centre (SBOAC), a hidden gem nestled along the East London riverside, just a stone’s throw from our SRC offices. Established in 1976 by a group of passionate local parents and leaders, SBOAC transformed what was once a derelict dock into a vibrant hub of activity and opportunity. Today, the centre offers safe, yet fun, outdoor sports both on and off the water, welcoming people of all abilities. But SBOAC is much more than just an activity centre; it’s a place where individuals push their boundaries, discover their inner strength, and forge lifelong friendships.
In an area where child poverty rates tragically reach up to 56%, SBOAC stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity. For children with disabilities, this centre offers more than just a place to play – it provides a nurturing environment where they can experience the joys of adventure, thanks to specialised staff and adapted equipment. Here, challenges like autism, sight impairments, and wheelchair use are not seen as limitations but as opportunities to embrace the excitement of outdoor exploration.
Our rowing challenge was about more than just the physical feat; it was about securing a future where these opportunities continue to thrive. SBOAC depends on a small, dedicated team of staff and trustees to maintain its annual operating budget, and in these challenging economic times, every bit of support counts.
While large charities undoubtedly do incredible work, it’s the smaller, grassroots organizations like SBOAC that often leave the most profound impact on their communities. They are the heartbeats of our neighborhoods, making a direct difference in the lives of those around us.
